Aug – 2025: University of Hyderabad (HCU) and ShutterSociety.HYD Collaboration, Celebrating World Photography Day
Every community reaches a moment when its passion begins to inspire beyond its own members. For ShutterSociety.HYD, that moment arrived when we brought our passion for photography into academia. Photography stepped beyond the streets of Hyderabad and entered one of India’s most respected academic institutions. Our first major collaboration with the University of Hyderabad (HCU) to celebrate World Photography Day marked the beginning of a new chapter, where learning, creativity, and community came together on a much larger stage.
World Photography Day arrived in August 2025, and for a passionate photography community like ours, celebrating this occasion was something we simply could not miss. Although ShutterSociety.HYD was only seven months old, it had already grown into a vibrant community of photographers from every background. Beginners, experienced photographers, mobile photographers, DSLR users, students from different universities, and working professionals had all come together with one common passion. It was inspiring to see how quickly our small idea had grown into a community that truly belonged to everyone.
Around that time, we received an unexpected message from a student at the University of Hyderabad. Our community had caught the attention of the Department of Communication, whose faculty appreciated the genuine purpose behind ShutterSociety.HYD and the way we were bringing photographers together through learning, creativity, and community. They reached out to us with an invitation to explore the possibility of celebrating World Photography Day together.
Purpose is the reason the journey begins. Belief from others is what keeps it growing.
The University of Hyderabad is one of India’s leading central universities, widely respected for its academic excellence, research, and vibrant student culture. For a young community that had started only a few months earlier, receiving an invitation from such a prestigious institution was a proud and unforgettable moment.
Mr. Sai Thejeshwar Rao, Mr. Cherry Mokka, and I were invited to visit the campus for an initial discussion. We had a wonderful meeting with the event coordinators and the Head of the Department, Dr. Janardhan Rao, where we discussed how both organizations could work together to make this celebration meaningful for students as well as the wider photography community.
During the discussion, we learned that the university had successfully organized similar celebrations in previous year, 2024. However, this was the first time they were officially collaborating with an independent photography community. Even more exciting was the opportunity they offered our members.
For the first time, the university decided to invite photography submissions from outside the campus, and ShutterSociety.HYD members would be the primary photography community participating in the exhibition.
For a community that was only seven months old, this was far more than a collaboration. It was a sign that the purpose behind our journey was beginning to reach people beyond our own meetups.
The meeting became even more exciting when the organizers shared the names of the distinguished guests for the celebration. Among them was renowned cinematographer DOP – Senthil Kumar Sir, the Director of Photography behind landmark Indian films such as Bahubali, RRR, and several other celebrated productions directed by S. S. Rajamouli. The moment we heard his name, we knew this collaboration was going to become an unforgettable experience for our entire community.
After the discussion, Dr. Janardhan Rao and the organizing team personally showed us around the university campus. We had the opportunity to visit photography and filmmaking laboratories, camera equipment rooms, editing suites, green screen studios, and various learning spaces where students develop their creative skills.
Walking through these facilities gave us a deeper appreciation for how seriously filmmaking, visual storytelling, and photography are nurtured within the university. We felt fortunate that our community was being welcomed into such an inspiring academic environment.
Another wonderful surprise was waiting for us.
The university generously offered ShutterSociety.HYD its own dedicated community stall for both days of the celebration. We could display our banners, introduce our community to students, interact with visitors, and answer questions about our activities. What touched us even more was learning that while several commercial brands participating in the event were allotted paid stalls, our space was provided completely free of cost.
The organizers explained that they genuinely appreciated the non-commercial vision of our community and wanted to support the work we were doing. That gesture meant far more to us than simply receiving a stall. It reflected the trust they had placed in our purpose.
In return, we were equally happy to contribute wherever we could. When the organizing team mentioned that they were looking for additional event sponsorship support, one of our community members, Mr. Sarath, who was associated with Vivo, stepped forward and helped connect the university with the brand. It was wonderful to see how our members were already contributing beyond photography and helping strengthen this collaboration.
After finalizing every detail, both teams officially confirmed the collaboration. Soon afterwards, the official collaboration poster featuring the University of Hyderabad and ShutterSociety.HYD was released across our social media platforms.
We immediately shared the exciting news with our community members and announced the photography exhibition submissions. Separate posts explaining all submission guidelines, categories, eligibility, and deadlines were also published so that every interested member could participate with complete clarity.
The response from our community was overwhelming. Members from different age groups and photography backgrounds enthusiastically submitted their work for the exhibition. As the selection process concluded, we were thrilled to learn that a significant number of ShutterSociety.HYD members had their photographs selected for display. Nearly half of the exhibition gallery featured photographs submitted by our community, and many participants proudly received official participation certificates from the University of Hyderabad.
Watching our members achieve this recognition inside one of India’s premier universities felt like a proud milestone, not just for them, but for the entire ShutterSociety.HYD family.
On 19th August 2025, we reached the University of Hyderabad early in the morning, excited to be part of our very first official academic collaboration. Walking into the campus and seeing the event preparations already underway was a proud feeling for all three of us.
For the first time, ShutterSociety.HYD had its own official banners displayed inside a university, one welcoming participants near the main auditorium and another at our dedicated community stall.
Success is not about reaching the destination alone. It is about how many people you inspire along the journey.
As students, faculty members, photography enthusiasts, and guests started arriving, many of them stopped by our stall to learn more about the community. Throughout the day, we introduced ShutterSociety.HYD, shared our journey, explained our monthly photowalks and community activities, and interacted with students who were excited to become part of our upcoming meetups. Watching people discover our community inside such a prestigious institution was a special feeling that words can hardly describe.

One of the biggest highlights of the day was meeting renowned cinematographer Senthil Kumar. We had the opportunity to introduce ourselves, share the story behind ShutterSociety.HYD, and explain why we had started this non-commercial photography community. He appreciated the initiative, encouraged our efforts, and was genuinely happy to see a community working towards inspiring new photographers and videographers. We were fortunate to spend a few memorable moments with him and capture photographs that will always remain special to us.
The keynote session by Senthil Kumar was an unforgettable experience for everyone present. Listening to him speak about cinematography, storytelling, lighting, camera movement, and filmmaking was inspiring in itself. One moment that left a lasting impression on all of us was when he played a sequence from Bahubali and carefully explained how every frame had been planned, filmed, and brought to life behind the camera. Watching one of Indian cinema’s most iconic scenes being broken down by the very person who created it felt like a dream come true for every photography and filmmaking enthusiast sitting in the auditorium.
Throughout the day, we attended several insightful sessions conducted by different speakers from the photography and filmmaking industry. Every session offered a new perspective, reminding us that learning in photography never truly ends.
The organizing team also arranged lunch for all the invited participants and volunteers. Sitting together inside the university cafeteria brought back countless memories of our own college days.
Conversations naturally shifted from photography to student life, old campus memories, and the excitement of being back inside a university after so many years. It was one of those simple moments that unexpectedly became one of the happiest memories of the day.
While one part of our team continued interacting with students at the community stall, many visitors also spent time exploring the photography exhibition. It was an incredibly proud moment to walk through the gallery and see so many photographs created by ShutterSociety.HYD members displayed alongside the work of talented photographers from different backgrounds. Every selected photograph represented not just an individual achievement, but also the growth of a community that had started only a few months earlier.
Throughout the event, several students approached us with questions about our community, upcoming photowalks, and how they could become part of ShutterSociety.HYD. Those conversations reminded us that our purpose had always been much bigger than organizing meetups. It was about creating a welcoming space where anyone with a passion for photography could learn, grow, and find like minded people.
Even after the university sessions concluded, our World Photography Day celebration was far from over.
Learning never exhausts the mind.
Later that evening, we headed to the Hyderabad Centre for Photography (HCP) exhibition at the State Art Gallery. Several members of our own community had photographs displayed there as well, making the visit even more special. We spent time exploring the exhibition, meeting fellow photographers, discussing different styles of visual storytelling, and understanding the thoughts behind each exhibited photograph. Every frame carried its own emotion, perspective, and story, reminding us once again that photography is far more than simply pressing a shutter.
Looking back, it felt as though we had celebrated World Photography Day in the best way we possibly could. We spent the morning and afternoon inside one of India’s finest universities, learning from some of the best minds in cinematography and photography, and ended the day surrounded by inspiring photographic work at one of Hyderabad’s leading exhibitions.
This collaboration will always remain one of the proudest milestones in the journey of ShutterSociety.HYD. For a community that had begun only seven months earlier with a simple vision of bringing photographers together, being welcomed by the University of Hyderabad, working alongside its faculty and students, and seeing our members represented inside its exhibition was far beyond anything we had imagined.
It reminded us that when a community is built with honesty, consistency, and purpose, opportunities naturally begin to find their way to you.

This was more than a celebration of World Photography Day. It was a celebration of learning, collaboration, friendship, and the belief that photography has the power to connect classrooms, communities, and countless creative minds.
