Jan – 2026: Celebrating New Year by Giving Back Through Photo Prints to Gudimalkapur Flower Market Vendors, Hyd
Every new year brings fresh hopes, new beginnings, and countless resolutions. For us, the most meaningful way to welcome 2026 was by returning memories to the people who had unknowingly become part of our photography journey. As ShutterSociety.HYD stepped into another year, we chose to begin it not with celebrations for ourselves, but with smiles that would stay with others forever.
A new year is often celebrated with fireworks, parties, resolutions, and midnight countdowns. For us, the best way to welcome a new beginning was with gratitude.
As ShutterSociety.HYD completed its very first year, we wanted our first morning of 2026 to reflect the values that had shaped our journey from the beginning. Photography had introduced us to countless inspiring people throughout the year, and once again, we wanted to return something meaningful to those who had unknowingly become part of our stories. There could not have been a better way to begin the year than by giving back through photography.
The way we begin a new year often defines the memories we create throughout it.
During our November 2025 Gudimalkapur Flower Market Photowalk, we shared a simple request with our members before concluding the meetup. Anyone interested was invited to capture meaningful portraits and candid photographs of the flower vendors and submit the original files after the walk. We announced that, as part of our New Year celebrations, We would print those photographs and personally return them to the vendors on the very first day of 2026.

The response was once again overwhelming. Members enthusiastically shared hundreds of beautiful portraits, colourful candid moments, and heartfelt photographs that perfectly reflected the vibrant spirit of the flower market.
As we prepared nearly 300 photo prints, however, we noticed that a few familiar faces were still missing. Just like our earlier giving back initiative, we wanted every possible vendor to receive a photograph. About a week before New Year’s Day, Mr. Sai Thejeshwar Rao and I visited the market once again with our cameras, quietly photographing the remaining vendors so that nobody would miss this surprise.
Looking back, those additional visits became just as meaningful as the celebration itself.
Every thoughtful detail today becomes someone’s unforgettable memory tomorrow.
Then came the morning of 1st January 2026.
While much of the city was still asleep after celebrating New Year’s Eve, a few members of ShutterSociety.HYD chose to begin the year differently.
Instead of recovering from late-night celebrations, we woke up before sunrise, collected hundreds of carefully packed photo prints, and made our way towards Gudimalkapur Flower Market. It felt special knowing that while many people welcomed the new year with parties, music, and fireworks, we were welcoming it with photographs, gratitude, and smiles.
The best celebrations are often the ones that bring happiness to someone else.
As the market slowly came alive with fresh flowers, colourful baskets, and the familiar energy of vendors preparing for the day, we began searching for each person holding their photograph.
Before we started, our members naturally split into small teams. While a few focused on finding vendors and handing over the photo prints, others quietly documented those priceless reactions through their cameras. Every smile, every surprise, and every heartfelt moment became a memory in itself.
Every conversation started with the same greeting.
Happy New Year!
Unlike Ugadi, where festival greetings naturally filled the market, this time the words carried the excitement of a brand new beginning. Along with every printed photograph came warm wishes for a happy, healthy, and successful year ahead. Within minutes, the atmosphere became even more joyful as smiles spread from one stall to another.
Many vendors immediately recognised themselves, while others looked at the photograph with complete surprise before breaking into laughter. Some proudly showed their prints to neighbouring vendors, while others carefully placed them inside their flower shops before continuing their work.
For many vendors, it was once again an unexpected gift they had never imagined receiving. Several shared that countless visitors had photographed them over the years, yet very few had ever returned to hand over those memories. Watching their genuine reactions reminded us once again that photography becomes far more meaningful when it creates happiness beyond the camera.
Every smile we witnessed that morning became the perfect beginning to a brand new year.
A new year begins beautifully when the first thing you share is kindness.
As the morning continued, our biggest challenge wasn’t distributing the photographs, it was finding the right people.
Gudimalkapur Flower Market is one of the busiest wholesale flower markets in Hyderabad. Vendors constantly move between different lanes, loading flowers, arranging fresh stock, attending customers, and helping one another throughout the morning.
Finding nearly 300 vendors among that lively movement became an adventure in itself. We spread across the market, checking each print carefully, asking nearby vendors for directions, and making sure every photograph reached the right hands.
Instead of feeling like work, it became one of the most enjoyable moments of the day. Every successful search ended with another smile, another “Happy New Year,” and another unforgettable reaction.
One moment, however, quietly stopped all of us.
As we searched for one of the young vendors whose portrait had been printed, we came to know that he had sadly passed away in a road accident just a few weeks earlier. He had been smiling in front of our cameras during the November photowalk, but he was no longer there to receive his photograph.
For a few moments, none of us knew what to say. A photograph we had printed to bring happiness had suddenly become a treasured memory for a family that had lost someone they loved.
We gently handed his portrait to his brothers, who accepted it with gratitude and emotion. It reminded us how unpredictable life can be, and how a single photograph can one day become priceless.
Sometimes a photograph becomes more than a memory. It becomes a way of holding on to someone forever.
No two reactions were the same.
Some vendors laughed the moment they saw themselves. Some quietly admired the photograph for several moments before saying a word.
Many immediately called family members, friends, or neighbouring vendors to proudly show them their printed portrait. Several senior citizens accepted their photographs with folded hands and heartfelt blessings, while younger vendors excitedly held their prints high, smiling for yet another photograph.
The colourful flower market became even more vibrant, not because of the flowers alone, but because hundreds of genuine smiles had become part of the celebration.
The most beautiful gift is one that tells someone, You mattered enough to be remembered.
As we continued moving through the market, we realised that the celebration had quietly become much bigger than our original plan.
It was no longer just about distributing photographs. Every conversation created a new connection. Every greeting brought another smile. Every blessing reminded us that the true value of photography lies not only in creating beautiful images, but also in creating meaningful relationships with the people who make those images possible.
Standing among the colours, fragrances, and joyful atmosphere of the flower market, we felt grateful that our community had chosen to begin 2026 in this way.
The first act of kindness in a new year often becomes the first beautiful memory of it.
Looking back, this initiative beautifully reflected how much ShutterSociety.HYD had grown in just one year.
What had begun as a simple idea during our November photowalk was carefully planned over the following weeks, supported wholeheartedly by our members, and brought to life on the very first morning of 2026.
The journey from capturing photographs to returning them reminded us once again that meaningful community work is never created in a single day. It grows through planning, teamwork, patience, and a shared purpose.
Communities leave their greatest impact not through the events they organize, but through the memories they create for others.
We sincerely thank every ShutterSociety.HYD member who captured portraits during the Gudimalkapur Flower Market Photowalk, shared their original photographs, helped identify vendors, and volunteered their New Year’s morning to make this initiative successful.
Beginning the first day of the year by serving others speaks volumes about the kind of community we continue to build together.
As we walked out of the flower market that afternoon, our envelopes were empty once again.
But our hearts were full.
The first day of 2026 had already given us something far more valuable than any New Year’s celebration could offer, the privilege of seeing hundreds of smiles created by something as simple as a printed photograph.
A heartfelt thanks to Mr. Murali Kuruba for once again documenting this beautiful initiative. Through his camera, he captured countless genuine emotions, surprised smiles, heartfelt blessings, laughter, and unforgettable reactions that have now become precious memories for our community.
And that was the perfect way for ShutterSociety.HYD to begin another year of photography, friendship, and giving back.
