Jul – 2026: Bonalu in Every Frame, A Photowalk Through Hyderabad’s Spirit, Colour & Celebration

Bonalu returned to Hyderabad with the same energy that makes the city’s festivals impossible to simply watch from a distance. Streets filled with colour, devotion, music, movement, and countless stories, giving photographers another opportunity to step into the celebration and capture it through their own perspective.

This time, we came together once again to experience Bonalu through photography, not just as spectators, but as storytellers. From powerful portraits and vibrant processions to small moments hidden between the crowds, every frame became a glimpse into the spirit of Hyderabad and the people who bring this festival alive.

Festivals and street life have always been a big part of our community, and Bonalu is one of those celebrations we always look forward to capturing together.

This time, we planned multiple Bonalu meetups, with Golconda Fort as the first one. As soon as the announcement went live, more than 100 photographers showed their interest, ready to come together and capture the colours, rituals, people, and countless stories unfolding around us.

Some days give you photographs. Some days give you memories. Bonalu gave us both.

Finally, the day arrived. Our photographers came in on time, cameras ready, and we began with a small briefing before stepping into the celebrations. The plan for the day was simple but full of possibilities: begin with the morning rituals, follow the temple journey, experience the energy of the Joginis, take some time to relax and connect, and later capture the powerful presence of the Potharajus.

The first frames began with the rituals. Bonalu has a visual language of its own, from the decorated pots and traditional attire to the expressions of devotion, colourful surroundings, and small details that can easily disappear when you are looking only at the bigger celebration. Our photographers spread out naturally, each looking for something different. Some waited for portraits, some searched for details, while others focused on the movement and atmosphere around them.

Sometimes the most powerful photograph is not the biggest moment, but the smallest detail that tells the whole story.

Amid all of this, one beautiful moment became especially memorable for our community. One of our members, Ms. Pooja Ekambe, came dressed in a beautiful Devi look, carrying the spirit of the festival into the frame with her traditional styling and lotus flower. She had come especially for our group, ready to give her time and poses so that our photographers could capture her portrait.

Our members gathered around her and started creating different frames, experimenting with compositions, perspectives, and expressions. A special thanks to Ms. Chikita and Mr. Amol, who voluntarily helped Ms. Pooja with the preparation and coordination. And a heartfelt thank you to Ms. Pooja for coming all the way in such a beautiful Devi look and becoming a special part of our Bonalu story.

The best photographs are often found where culture, emotion, and a curious eye meet.

As the morning continued, our community kept growing. Some photographers had arrived early, while a few more joined us later. Naturally, the group photographs kept happening one after another, capturing different sets of members as they arrived and became part of the day.

Between the captures, there was also time to slow down. People sat together, had some snacks, checked their photographs, shared their favourite clicks, and asked each other about camera settings. Someone would show a frame they had just captured, another person would suggest a different composition, and beginners would ask questions without hesitation. These small conversations are often where the real learning of a photowalk happens.

What made the day even more special was the way our members naturally started forming small groups inside the crowd. During a festival as busy as Bonalu, photographers were constantly moving, looking for moments, and trying to find the right position. Instead of everyone working alone, members started supporting one another, keeping an eye on each other, sharing space, and helping someone get a better frame.

It was a simple thing, but it showed something important about our community. We may arrive as individual photographers, but once we are together, we naturally become a team.

A good photograph captures a moment. A good community makes sure nobody misses it.

The celebrations continued, and the atmosphere became more energetic as the Joginis and the procession moments began. The photographers were ready again, cameras moving continuously as the colours, expressions, rituals, and movement unfolded around them.

Every few steps brought another story, another face, another expression, and another frame worth waiting for.

While the festival was happening around us, something special was happening within our community too. New photographers were getting comfortable with people they had never met before. Experienced members were helping beginners.

Small groups were moving together through the crowd. And somewhere between one photograph and the next, people who had arrived as strangers were already talking like friends.

The day also brought an unexpected opportunity to share our story beyond the photowalk itself. ABN Media featured our community with a live interview from the festival, and Telugu 360 Media also spoke with our members about ShutterSociety.HYD, the Bonalu celebration, and what we were doing there as a photography community.

Our members got the opportunity to speak about why we come together, what our community stands for, and how photography can help people experience festivals and culture in a completely different way. For us, these moments of recognition are not only about being on television. They are opportunities to tell more people why communities like ours matter and how photography can bring people together.

When photographers move together, the festival becomes more than something we capture. It becomes something we experience.

As the day moved towards the afternoon, there was still plenty of energy left in the group. Our attention slowly shifted towards the Potharajus, one of the most powerful visual elements of the Bonalu celebrations.

The colours, expressions, traditional appearance, movement, and energy created an entirely different photography experience. Photographers moved carefully around the performers, waiting for the right expressions and moments.

Some looked for powerful portraits, while others captured the movement, details, and atmosphere surrounding them.

And then something beautiful happened. Photography turned into celebration.

With the permission of the Potharajus, some of our members joined them in dancing.

That moment perfectly captured what this meetup had become. We did not come only to photograph Bonalu. We came to experience it together.

By evening, around 6 PM, we finally began wrapping up. We were tired after spending the entire day walking, photographing, talking, learning, and celebrating, but nobody really wanted the day to end. There had been too many moments, too many photographs, too many conversations, and too many memories created along the way.

From the first morning rituals to the final Potharaju frames, the day gave everyone something different. Some went home with better photographs, some with new camera knowledge, some with new friends, and many with memories that had nothing to do with the settings they used on their cameras.

We came to capture Bonalu, but somewhere between the frames, we became part of the celebration.

That is what made this Bonalu meetup special for ShutterSociety.HYD. It was a full day of photography, but it was never only about photography. It was about culture, people, learning, friendship, coordination, and celebrating Hyderabad together.

And as we walked away from Golconda Fort in the evening, one thing was clear. The first Bonalu meetup had given us far more than photographs. It had given us another beautiful chapter in the story of a community that continues to learn, explore, and celebrate together.
